What Are Alexa Hunches?

Alexa Hunches alert you about smart devices that aren't in their usual state and can proactively act to take action for you.

Important: Starting on 6/9/2026, Alexa will no longer support the Hunches feature.

After this date, Alexa will no longer suggest or perform automatic actions through Hunches for your devices. This includes lights, plugs, switches, vacuums, and water heaters.

Note: If you have an Amazon Smart Thermostat, you can still use Alexa's automatic control feature with your device.

To keep automatic actions, you can set up a Routine in the Alexa app.

Hunches include suggestions and automatic actions. With suggestions, Alexa can notify you when a connected smart device isn't in its usual state. For example, if one of your smart lights is on when you say "Good night," Alexa can alert you and offer to turn it off. Suggestions are activated by default.

There are two types of automatic actions.

  • Grouping actions: They’re activated by default. They allow Alexa to add connected smart devices proactively to the groups based on their names or how you typically use them together.
  • Lighting actions: They need to be activated manually. They allow Alexa to control certain lights proactively when it has a hunch that nobody is home or everyone is asleep.

If a Hunch is available and you have notifications turned on for the Alexa app, then Alexa sends a notification to your phone or tablet. Also, Alexa offers a Hunch with certain voice commands, such as "Set alarm" or "Good night." You can also ask Alexa, "Do you have any hunches?"

Notifications for Hunches don't occur often and you can deactivate them anytime. To get Hunches sent to your phone or tablet, turn on notifications for the Alexa App.

You can manage your smart home device status and usage history at any time. To learn more, go to Alexa Privacy Settings.
