Prepaid Wireless E911 Fee
The 911 fee (also referred to as the E911 surcharge or prepaid wireless 911 service charge) is a state-mandated fee imposed on retail transactions involving prepaid wireless telecommunications services—including the sale of prepaid wireless phones, prepaid calling cards, and the recharging of prepaid wireless devices or airtime. The fee is collected from the consumer at the point of sale by the retailer or seller and is remitted to the applicable state department of revenue or designated state agency. The fee is assessed in addition to any applicable sales tax and must be separately stated on the consumer's invoice or receipt. The specific fee amount or rate, filing frequency, and administering agency vary by jurisdiction.
