Enroll in the Amazon Tax Exemption Program (ATEP)

Account administrators can enroll their business or organization into the Amazon Tax Exemption Program (ATEP) by using the Amazon Tax Exemption wizard, or by uploading their tax exemption documents.

Before enrolling your account in ATEP

Make sure that you have the following info before enrolling in ATEP:

  • States or jurisdictions for which you have a tax exemption.
  • The type of exemption for your business or organization (for example, resale, direct pay permit, etc.).
  • The name and address of your organization.
  • Exemption numbers or exemption forms, if applicable.

Note: We do not accept sales tax permits, articles of incorporation, tax licenses, IRS determination letters (unless required by state law), W9s, or certificate of registrations for enrolling into the program.

How to enroll in ATEP

To add or edit tax exemption details for your business account:

  1. Select Business Settings.
  2. Select Tax Exemption & licenses, and select Tax exemption.
  3. Select Add Tax Exemptions, and then choose one of the following options:
    1. Quick wizard setup — The Amazon Tax Exemption wizard will guide you through enrollment. Your exemption will activate within 15 minutes, and you will receive a notification email.
    2. Manual document upload — Documents should include a date, signature, and description of items (where applicable). Ensure that you are submitting valid tax exemption documents for each applicable state in which you are claiming a tax exemption. We will review the forms and verify your exemption within 24 hours.
Note: If you have multiple documents per exemption, first combine the documents into 1 file using an online tool or Adobe Acrobat.

You can use your personal account email for a business account and transfer your ATEP settings during or after registration via the Tax Exemption page. Only legal entity group administrators can submit tax documents for multiple entities.

Note: We confirm the state tax IDs you enter with the state taxing authorities. If the authorities report that an ID is expired, invalid, or incorrect, we will remove the exemption and notify you via email.

After enrolling

Once you've enrolled in ATEP, you can generate transaction-specific exemption certificates that will list the items ordered per transaction. Refer to transaction-specific exemption certificates for more information.

To unenroll, administrators can go to the Tax exemption page, select Actions, and select Expire.

Submit documentation for multiple legal entities

If your business account contains multiple legal entities, you can upload individual tax exemption documents for each entity. Select Your Account, Amazon Business Settings, and Tax exemption. Then select Manual document upload.

You can upload documents and select multiple legal entities in 1 submission, but only 1 submission is permitted per state.

After you submit your documents, you will receive a confirmation email within approximately 24 hours.
