My Heat Pump Isn't Blowing the Correct Air Temperature with My Thermostat

My Amazon Smart Thermostat's setting is for heat, but I get cool air. Or the setting is for cool, but I get heat.

Important: Before working on the thermostat, always switch off the power to the heating and cooling system at the breaker box or by using the system's primary power switch. Verify that the power is off before working on the thermostat.

If your system doesn’t have a heat pump, refer to Amazon Smart Thermostat Doesn't Switch on Heat.

First, try to reset the heat pump's reversing valve. The reversing valve on the heat pump compressor dictates whether the heat pump produces heat or cool air.

  1. Open the Alexa app .
  2. Select Devices .
  3. Under Thermostat, select your Thermostat to open its control dashboard.
  4. Select Device Settings .
  5. Select Thermostat Configuration.
  6. Select HVAC Type.
  7. Select Reversing Valve.
  8. Flip this setting from O to B or from B to O.
  9. Follow the on-screen instructions in the Alexa app. When the thermostat display shows "APP," press the device Mode button to accept the change.

Next, ensure that wires are connected to the correct terminals.

  • If you have a heat pump system, check that the Y wires, O/B wires, and R, G, C wires are connected to the correct device terminals. For systems with a heat pump, there should be no W wire in the W terminal.
  • In a heat pump with a backup electric heat system, ensure that the wire is connected to W2 instead of W.

If your system still isn't working, try contacting an HVAC specialist.
