Create or Expand an Amazon Family

Learn how to create or expand an Amazon Family, invite an adult and add children or teens, switch a profile on a shared account to an individual account, understand what data transfers during the process, and how to undo the transition.

Invite Someone to Join an Amazon Family

An Amazon Family is managed by an organizer. The organizer controls the group, including inviting and removing members and managing shared settings.

Adult members need their own Amazon account to join an Amazon Family. If they don't have one, they can create one during the sign-up process.

Children and teens are added as profiles under a parent's account, and do not need their own Amazon account.

Amazon Family lets an organizer share select benefits with the people in their household. An Amazon Family can include:

  • Up to 2 adults, each with their own Amazon account
  • Up to 4 teens, added as a profile or as a teen account created before April 7, 2025
  • Up to 4 children, added as profiles managed by a parent or guardian

If the Amazon Family is full, the Organizer will need to wait until a seat becomes available before they can invite a new member to join.

To invite a member to an Amazon Family the Organizer must:

  1. Go to Amazon Family.
  2. Under New — Add a new member, select Send an Invite.
  3. Enter the name and email address of the person you’d like to invite and select Continue.
    • The invitation lasts for 14 days. If it expires, a new one can be sent.
    • If the invitation was sent to the wrong email address, it can be cancelled and sent to the correct email address.
    • Each invitation link can only be used once. If an invitation is declined, it cannot be reversed and a new one must be sent.
    • If the invitation was not received, check the email spam folder or visit the Amazon Family page directly to see the status.
  4. A Family organizer may also add a member by selecting Sign up together on supported devices, such as a Fire Tablet, and following the on-screen instructions.

Note: If an Amazon Family previously used two-way payment sharing, removing a member will transition the Amazon Family to one-way sharing. When the removed adult or a new adult rejoins, only the Family Organizer's payment method will be shared and can be used to make purchases by other members of the Family. For more information, go to About Payment Sharing in Amazon Family.

Switch from a Shared Account to an Individual Account

A profile is a personalized experience on a shared Amazon account. It uses searches and browsing history to give tailored recommendations.

If a member uses a profile under someone else's shared Amazon account, they can turn that profile into their own separate Amazon account.

Switch from a profile to an account if the profile user:

  • Is 18 or older.
  • Uses a profile on someone else's Amazon account.
  • Shares an account is in good standing (no policy violations or unresolved account issues).

Note: A teen or child profile is not eligible to switch to an individual Amazon account. If the profile user's phone or device is signed into an app store as a child or teen, the transition may be blocked.

If the profile user is transitioning data to an existing Amazon account, that account must also:

  • Be in good standing (no policy violations or unresolved account issues).
  • Not be a teen account.

Important: Profile to account transitions are permanent.

Switch from a Profile on a Shared Amazon Account to an Individual Account

  1. On the Amazon Family page, select a profile on the shared account, and follow the prompts to create or sign-in to a new individual account.
  2. Amazon sends a request to the account holder to confirm they approve the profile user's transition to an individual account, and enrolment in their Amazon Family.
  3. The account holder chooses which data to share with the new account. Any data the account holder does not approve will not be transferred.

Note: If the profile user cancels or the session times out during setup, no changes are made to the account. The profile user can start the process again from the Amazon Family page.

If the option to switch to an individual account is not visible on the Amazon Family page, the feature is not available for the shared account. Check back periodically to see if it has become available.

What Data Transfers to the New Account

Here is what is shared and what transfers when the profile user moves to their own individual account.

What is shared

These benefits are shared with the Amazon Family (subject to sharing which is controlled by the Family Organizer):

  • Prime benefits: The profile user keeps access to Prime through Amazon Family.
  • Kindle library: Shared books, reading history, notes, and highlights.
  • Order history: Orders, including video and media purchases, are shared across the Amazon Family. After the transition, Family members can see each other's order history. This can be changed in order history sharing settings. If the profile user leaves the Family, they lose access to shared order history.

Note: If the organizer ends their Prime membership, the new account will also lose access to any Prime benefits gained by joining their Amazon Family.

What Moves to the New Account

The following profile data moves to the new account:

  • Shopping recommendations: Browsing history and personalized recommendations.
  • Orders and shipping addresses: Past orders and saved addresses.
  • Lists: Lists and saved items.
  • Prime Video: The profile user's shows, movies, and where they left off.
  • Amazon Music: Playlists, stations, and favorite artists.

What does not transfer: Anything not listed above stays with the original account. This includes gift card balances and promotional credits. Some subscriptions may not carry over and will need to be set up again on the new account.

How long it takes

Most of the data arrives on the new account within a few minutes. Some data can take up to 48 hours.

The new account works right away, but the Family Organizer must approve keeping the profile user in the Family and approve sharing additional items.

Family Organizer Approval

Sharing benefits requires the Family Organizer to share a payment method, which can be used to make purchases within the Family. The Family Organizer will be notified of purchases made with it.

The Family Organizer can review each item and choose what to share, including the profile user's profile, order history, Lists, shipping addresses, Kindle library, Alexa Family sharing, and Amazon device management. Anything the Family Organizer does not approve is not shared.

If the Family Organizer declines the transition request or does not respond before it expires, the request is automatically declined. The profile user's account stays functional, but the profile user is not added to the Family and no items are shared.

Additional Notes About Transferring to a New Account

If a member leaves the Amazon Family after transition, they must wait 12 months before joining a different Amazon Family. They can rejoin their previous Amazon Family at any time, if a seat is available.

The profile user can check the progress of the transition on the Amazon Family page. The status will show as "In progress" while data is still being transferred, "Complete" when finished, or "Action needed" if something requires attention.

The profile user only needs to start the transition once. Other Amazon apps, such as Prime Video and Amazon Music, are notified automatically and will begin updating the data separately.

Some apps may show missing content or empty screens while data is still being transferred. This is temporary and will resolve once migration is complete.

If the profile user transitioned to a new account from a shared account without a profile, recommendations, watch history, and browsing history will start fresh. Personalization will build over time as the new account is used.

Addresses from the shared account are automatically copied to the new account. If any are missing, the profile user can re-enter them manually at Your Addresses.

Drone delivery eligibility may not carry over, so the profile user may need to re-enroll through the delivery settings.
