Understand your tax exemption messages

When you check out as a tax-exempt customer, the final Review your Order screen displays messages next to each item to show whether you'll pay tax on them.

Items on which you won't pay tax will have the message: Tax Exemption Applied.

In cases where you will pay tax on an item, you'll find one of the following messages. The following table explains what each message means.

This seller does not participate in Amazon's tax-exemption program.

Amazon calculates tax on behalf of sellers as per their instructions. Each online seller has different tax collection obligations depending upon their business procedures, operations, and activities.

Not all sellers participate in ATEP. To get tax refunds on orders Fulfilled by Amazon, contact Amazon Customer Service. If a third-party seller fulfills the order, contact the seller through buyer/seller messaging.

Your business account does not hold an exemption for the state you are shipping to.

Your business account does not hold an exemption for the state you are shipping to, so the order is taxable.

In general, exemptions for business accounts (organizations) and individual business accounts are mutually exclusive. Contact your administrator if you have any questions.

Your business account does not hold an exemption for the state you are shipping to and business exemptions override individual account exemptions.

Exemption, or lack of exemption, at the business account (organization) level overrides any exemptions on individual accounts. To update your exemption, contact your administrator.

The business account exemption for the state you are shipping to is expired.

The business account exemption expired for the state you want to ship to, so the order is taxable.

During checkout, tax exemption was removed.

The buyer removed the tax exemption while checking out. All exemption-eligible items contain a link to remove the sales tax. Look for the link Tax Exemption Applied or Tax Exemption Available in the checkout process to update the tax exemption.

This item is not eligible for a full tax exemption.

The item is not eligible for a full tax exemption because you didn't provide a local exemption document, or the exemption does not remove all applicable taxes.

Your tax exemption is limited to purchases from specific sellers.

If you upload your certificate, it may prompt you to enter a seller of record on the certificate.

When you choose to list Amazon or any of its subsidiaries, we can only exempt you from those purchases.

To extend your exemption to include Amazon.com Services Inc., its affiliates, and participating third-party sellers, don't include a seller of record.

You only need a date, signature, and description of the items (if applicable).
