Tax Refunds on Freight Forward Exports from the United States

You can request a tax refund for purchases fulfilled by Amazon and delivered to a valid freight forwarding company.

To request a refund, use the following instructions:

  1. Tax refunds can only be requested for shipments delivered to a licensed customs broker or forwarding agent.
  2. Supporting documentation must provide evidence your freight forwarded items shipped to a location outside of the United States. The address on the documentation must match the address where the shipment was delivered.
  3. Orders must not exceed the statute of refund limitations of the state to which it was delivered.

What documentation is required?

Amazon requires copies of bill of lading or air way bills for items shipped by freight forwarder. Documents must display the location of delivery as evidence of their final destination. The following information must be listed:

  • The 17-digit order ID or tracking ID
  • Final destination outside the United States
  • Freight Forwarder address

We do not accept Word documents, Excel files, pictures of shipping labels, or mobile screenshots.

*** Effective December 1, 2022, the Florida Department of Revenue certifies freight forwarders through an application process. If sales tax was applied to your purchase that was shipped to a certified freight forwarder please contact us at tax-exempt@amazon.com.

If you used another method to forward goods to locations outside the US, please provide a valid airway bill or bill of lading as refunds are not issued in the absence of documentation. For more information please visit the Florida Department of Revenue Website.

Where do I send my documentation?

Send scanned copies in PDF format along with the following information to tax-exempt@amazon.com:

  • Your order number (17 digits in this format: XXX-XXXXXXX-XXXXXXX).
  • If submitting a request for a tax refund on multiple orders, documentation will need to be provided for each order and clearly marked which order it pertains to. Failure to mark which order corresponds with which document will result in denial of refund.

What cannot be refunded?

  • Orders which are hand carried outside of the United States or delivered to a hotel or residential address do not qualify.
