Amazon Trade-In Terms and Conditions

By participating in the trade-in program (the Program), you agree on behalf of yourself and all members of your household and others who use the Program under your account to these terms and conditions (collectively, Program Terms). Please note that your participation in the Program is also governed by the agreements listed and linked below, as well as all other applicable terms, conditions, limitations, and requirements on the Amazon.com website, including those stated in Frequently Asked Questions and Help pages, all of which (as changed over time) are incorporated into these Program Terms. Please read these Program Terms carefully.

General Terms

  • Each trade-in order is limited to a maximum value of $1800. If you want to trade in items with a value greater than $1800, you must make multiple trade-in orders. When purchasing a new phone with a trade-in, you may only trade in one phone and purchase one new phone per order.
  • The program is available to customers with a valid return address in the United States (excluding territories). We cannot accept trade-ins with Amazon Lockers or PO boxes as return addresses, or from addresses outside of the United States.
  • You must unlock or deregister any devices submitted for trade-in from cloud services prior to shipping the device. For instructions on how to unlock or deregister your device, please visit Unlock or Deregister Your Device for Trade-In.
  • You must back up all personal data on a device before shipping, and perform a factory reset to remove all personal data. You are solely responsible for removing all data, including confidential and personal data, from the device prior to shipping. Amazon does not accept any responsibility or liability for any lost files or data. If a SIM card or similar data storage is discovered in a device, it is destroyed upon acceptance of the item.

Payment and Terms

Items we accept will be purchased from you, and you will be paid for the items with an Amazon.com Gift Card(s) issued for the value of your trade-in (subject to adjustment as noted below in the Downgrades, Trade-In Value, and Instant Payment sections). Amazon.com Gift Cards are subject to the Amazon.com Gift Card Terms & Conditions. The Amazon.com Gift Card(s) will be deposited directly into your Amazon.com account. You will not be entitled to any other payment for items you submit for trade-in using the Program. You will not receive any payment for items that are not received by Amazon (subject to the Instant Payment terms below).

If at the time of purchase of any device you are submitting for trade-in, you elected to pay for such trade-in item in monthly payments, any remaining payments must be paid in accordance with the monthly payment offer terms regardless of whether your item is accepted for trade-in.

In the event that you submit a trade-in and receive a promotional credit or rebate towards the purchase of a new device, this offer may, in some limited cases, not be combined with other offers. Proceed to checkout from your Shopping Cart to confirm whether a promotion has been applied.

Instant Payment

Instant Payment may be offered on eligible trade-ins. If your submission is eligible for and you choose to participate in Instant Payment for your trade-in items, you will receive Amazon.com Gift Card(s) in the amount of the trade-in value at the time you initiate a trade-in. To be eligible for Instant Payment you must reside in the United States, have a valid credit card associated with your Amazon.com account, have a payment history on Amazon.com, and meet other factors within our sole discretion (which may include, for example, trade-in order history and prior products purchased on Amazon.com). We will not use a credit report to determine your eligibility. We reserve the right to discontinue Instant Payment at any time. The following additional terms apply to Instant Payment submissions:

  • If you selected Instant Payment and we have delivered you an Amazon.com Gift Card(s) in the amount of the trade-in value, then you authorize us to revoke the Amazon.com Gift Card(s) and/or if all or part of the Amazon.com Gift Card is used, charge your payment method for the full amount of the Amazon.com Gift Card(s) if:
    • you cancel the trade-in request;
    • the trade-in(s) is/are not received by the date specified in the trade-in confirmation email you receive and as shown on Your Trade-In Account;
    • the trade-in item(s) is/are Rejected Item(s); or
    • the trade-in item is a Downgraded item with a lower trade-in value and, at the time of your submission, you opted to receive the lower trade-in value rather than have the item returned to you.
  • If you selected Instant Payment and received a promotional credit or rebate toward the purchase of a new Amazon device and (i) you cancel the trade-in, (ii) your trade-in is not received by the date specified in the trade-in confirmation email you receive and as shown on Your Trade-In Account, or (iii) your trade-in is a Rejected Item, then you authorize us to charge your payment method for the amount of the promotional credit or rebate used.
  • We will not be liable for any charges, interest, or other fees incurred by as a result of Amazon charging your payment method for the Amazon.com Gift Card(s) or amount of the promotional credit.
  • In the event your payment method must be charged but the transaction cannot be completed successfully, we reserve the right to pursue any available remedies.
  • We may limit or restrict the number and amount of Instant Payment trade-ins you can place.

Limited Time Rebate and Promotional Credit

For eligible trade-ins, you may receive an additional Amazon limited-time rebate applied directly to the purchase of select new phones. This Amazon limited-time rebate is separate from the trade-in rebate received for an item’s trade-in value. This Amazon limited-time rebate amount may vary and is subject to change. When trading in a qualifying phone and purchasing an eligible new phone in the same transaction, this Amazon limited-time rebate will, at our discretion, either (i) automatically be applied at checkout; or (ii) be refunded to your original payment method. If your original payment method is no longer available, then we will credit your Amazon account in the amount of such Amazon limited-time rebate.

If the trade-in phone is later rejected or you fail to send in your trade-in phone within the specified timeframe, then the Amazon limited-time rebate amount may be charged back to your account.

Some trade-in submissions may qualify for a limited-time promotional credit off of a new qualifying Amazon device subject to the additional Limited Time Promotion Terms and Conditions based on device type (Kindle, Tablet, Fire TV, Echo, Home Security Devices, and eero). Terms and conditions for bonus discount trade in programs may vary.

Cancellation

We reserve the right to cancel any trade-in in our sole discretion. If we cancel a trade-in that you have already shipped, we will return the item to you at no additional cost. You may cancel a trade-in submission at any time until we have received the trade-in items by visiting Your Trade-In Account. You will not receive any payment for a canceled trade-in (subject to the Instant Payment terms).

Termination

We may terminate your participation in the Program at any time in our sole discretion, including without limitation if you submit items for trade-in that are counterfeit or stolen. We may also suspend or terminate the Program at any time without notice to you. Our failure to insist upon or enforce your strict compliance with these Program Terms will not constitute a waiver of any of our rights.

Criteria and Acceptance

Items you submit for trade-in are subject to acceptance by us, and may be purchased by us or a third-party merchant.

Submissions must be sent to us within 30 days of receipt of your new phone if you are purchasing a new phone at the same time as your trade-in, or within 45 days after completing your standalone trade-in order.

The items you submit must meet Product Condition Criteria as found on the Amazon Trade-In page, as determined by us in our sole discretion, or such items will be rejected. Some stores may have additional requirements, such as presentation of a valid photo ID.

Rejected Items

Items failing to meet the Product Condition Criteria or otherwise unacceptable for any of the reasons listed below will be rejected (Rejected Items). Rejection reasons and return package tracking progress can be viewed from Your Trade-In Account. You will not receive any payment for Rejected Items and such items will be returned to you, subject to the following exceptions:

  • We will not return, and will dispose of in our sole discretion, the following Rejected Items to you:
    • Undeliverable items. Undeliverable items are Rejected Items that we attempted to return to you, but were returned by the carrier back to us as undeliverable.
    • Counterfeit items. Counterfeit items are Rejected Items that match the product displayed in the Trade-In Storefront, but are counterfeit reproductions.
  • We may, in our sole discretion, dispose of or return to you the following Rejected Items:
    • Extra items are items received by us but are not listed provided in addition to the item(s) listed in your trade-in order.
    • Damaged items that match the product displayed in the Trade-In store but are not in an acceptable condition, as determined by us in our sole discretion.
    • Incomplete items that are missing any required components, as specified in the Product Condition Criteria (such as specified accessories) that were included with the original item.
    • We may, in our sole discretion, dispose of, accept or return Incorrect trade-in items. Incorrect items are Rejected Items that are entirely different from the product version displayed in the Trade-In store and for which there is no offer in the Trade-In store.
  • We may not return items to you if the number of Rejected Items received from you is excessive, as determined by Amazon.

Downgrades

Downgraded items are items that are graded in a lower acceptable condition than what was specified during the submission, or items that do not match the specifications provided during the trade-in process. If the item was Downgraded to a lower condition that is still eligible for trade-in and, at the time of your submission, you opted to receive the lower trade-in value rather than have the item returned to you, then you will receive an Amazon.com Gift Card(s) in the amount of the trade-in value for the lower condition. If you did not opt to receive the lower trade-in value, we will return the Downgraded items to you, and return shipping charges may apply.

Trade-In Value

We cannot confirm the trade-in value of an item until we receive your trade-in. Despite our best efforts, a small number of the items in our catalog may display an inaccurate trade-in value. If the correct trade-in value of an item is lower than the stated trade-in value, we may, at our discretion, either contact you for instructions on whether you wish to submit the trade-in at the correct trade-in value or cancel your trade-in and notify you of such cancellation. If your trade-in is cancelled due to an incorrect trade-in value, we will return the item to you at no additional cost. You will not receive any payment for the returned item.

Term Changes

We may in our discretion change these Program Terms, Amazon.com's Conditions of Use and Privacy Notice, or any aspect of the Program, at any time without notice to you. If any change to these terms is found invalid, void, or for any reason unenforceable, that change is severable and does not affect the validity and enforceability of any remaining changes or conditions. Your continued participation in the Program after the effective date of any revisions constitutes your acceptance of the terms.

Legal Title and Risk of Loss

You represent and warrant that you have the legal right to sell all items you submit for trade-in using the Program, that the items are not counterfeit or stolen, and that your submission of them complies fully with the Program Terms. We may use a stolen goods database to determine if submitted items were ever reported stolen. Amazon does not take title to or assume risk of loss for items submitted for Trade-In unless we receive and accept such items.

Disputes

Any dispute or claim arising from or relating to the Program Terms or the Program is subject to the dispute resolution, governing law, class-action waiver, disclaimer of warranties, limitation of liability, and all other terms in the Amazon.com Conditions of Use.

Disclaimer of Warranties and Limitation of Liability

WITHOUT LIMITING THE DISCLAIMER OF WARRANTIES AND LIMITATION OF LIABILITY TERMS IN THE AMAZON.COM CONDITIONS OF USE, OUR TOTAL LIABILITY, WHETHER IN CONTRACT, WARRANTY, TORT (INCLUDING NEGLIGENCE) OR OTHERWISE, WILL NOT EXCEED THE TRADE-IN VALUE OF YOUR SUBMISSION. THIS LIMITATION OF LIABILITY WILL APPLY TO THE FULLEST EXTENT PERMITTED BY LAW AND WILL SURVIVE CANCELLATION OR TERMINATION OF ANY TRADE-IN SUBMISSION.

Electronics Condition Criteria

During the Trade-In submission process, you'll answer questions about the condition of your electronic item.

The following condition descriptions outline the minimum condition criteria that are accepted for trade-in and include:

  • The device must be owned by you and not be financed through a third-party, such as a phone carrier.
  • The device must match the product title and version, carrier, and storage size selected (as applicable).
  • If applicable, the device must be unlocked and de-registered from any online accounts, including personal accounts. Depending on your device, these online accounts may include your Amazon, Apple iCloud, Samsung, Ring, Google Nest, Fitbit, or other accounts. For more information, visit Prepare Your Device for Trade-In.
  • The device does not have any internal components projecting outside of it, such as an expanded battery.
  • The device includes all originally included accessories, such as handheld remotes, or controllers.
  • The device still contains or is comprised of all originally manufactured parts.
  • The device has not been internally or externally customized in any way.

To be paid at the highest value for your Trade-In, your device must be in good condition with all features of the device operational. It must power on, hold a charge, and not power off unexpectedly. It mustn't have any breaks, dents, cracks, missing buttons, or other defects beyond normal wear and tear, and mustn't have any water damage, corrosion, or significant wear marks. If your device doesn't meet these criteria, it may be Downgraded or deemed a Rejected Item in accordance with the Amazon Trade-In Terms and Conditions.

Note:
  • Remember to prepare your device for trade-in before shipping or, if eligible, dropping it off at a participating location. For more information, visit Prepare Your Device for Trade-In.
  • If your device doesn't meet these requirements, consider recycling it through the Amazon Recycling Program.
